The Crafty writers aren’t exactly sure which iteration of Cheeky Monkey's Silverback 2022 brings, but recent memories of Hyperbole, last year's tequila barrel-aged version, certainly have us excited for the hotly-anticipated yearly release.
It seems to be a recurring theme that the Cheeky brewers change the not just the design of Silverback’s packaging, but the size too. In 2022, Silverback finds itself in 375ml cans – a compact approach compared to last year’s 750ml bottles. Some will love the decision while others will certainly loath, while a fresh, simplistic label adorns the cans in line with their most recent branding upgrade.
As for the beer, it’s a similar Silverback featuring with some minor brewhouse adjustments to the malt bill yielding a complex and entirely sturdy beer with stewed fruits, treacle, sweet coffee and Medjool dates. On the nose, vanilla and coffee syrup are prominent along with a touch of sweet chocolate biscuit and caramel. It’s worth noting that, despite its weighty ABV, Silverback is devoid of any alcohol heat, or malt astringency, allowing malt character to be elevated and enhanced.
Despite the potential controversy of a packaging downsize is in 2022, punters can rest assured that, no matter the serving vessel, 2022’s Silverback is as good, if not better, than any previous reiteration.
