Cheeky Monkey

It's not uncommon in the beer world for prospective brewery owners to experience delays. In fact, when someone tells you they're planning to open a brewery in six months it pays to add on another six. At least. Yet, for all the delays faced by breweries across the land, few - if any - can have experienced as many as the Cheeky Monkey Brewery & Cidery.

By the time they poured their first beer, the brewery's owners had been locked in court battles with the owner of a neighbouring winery for nearly two years. She had argued that the yeasts used in brewing could potentially contaminate the indigenous yeasts at her biodynamic winery, but in April 2012 final approval was granted and Cheeky Monkey opened its doors.

The doors opened onto a venue befitting its location in Caves Road in the heart of the world famous Margaret River region. Designed as a family-friendly destination - complete with a seriously impressive kids play area - it combines a 450-capacity brewery bar and restaurant with a cellar door for Killerby and Ferngrove Wines.

If there was a plus side to the long delay in opening, it's that local boy Jared "Red" Proudfoot, who has since gone on to become one of the founders and head brewers at Pirate Life, had time to spend 18 months brewing at Scottish craft beer giants BrewDog before returning home to head up the brewing side of the business.

While the faces behind the beers have changed since, the brewery has kept on expanding and the beers have kept on improving, with a focus on honing excellent hazy IPAs in particular bringing them a new cohort of fans.

In 2019 came arguably the biggest change since the brewery launched, however, with the opening of a second production facility 25 minutes away in Vasse capable of producing up to four million litres per annum over time. With the move came another rebrand and some tweaks to the core lineup, now in the hands of a new brewery team, and the opening of a bar on the site too.

The move heralded plenty of awards success too, with the brewery claiming the inaugural WA Beer of the Year title at the WA Good Food Guide Awards in 2020 as well as Champion Small Brewery at the 2021 Australian International Beer Awards, among others, before embarking on another range refresh and rebrand as 2021 came to a close.

Cheeky Monkey Hazy IPA

Published October 12, 2020
The weekly sum of new 2020 releases can challenge the purchase decisions of even the most "checked in" beer fan, so the arrival of a new core range beer seems almost gleefully avant-garde or, at best, blindly optimistic, even if it’s hazy. And that would be the case here, if there wasn’t a longer story at play. Cheeky Monkey Feijoa & Hibiscus Sour

Published Yesterday
Flexing their creative muscles yet again, this times in the realm of fruit-laden sours, the Cheeky Monkey crew have released a feisty feijoa and hibiscus sour in honour of outgoing senior brewer Gav Williams. The pinky-orange hue when poured is eye-catching, while perky sweet guava and pineapple dominate the aroma. A modest level of acid is prominent on tasting, met by sweetly tropical feijoa, green apple, guava and a touch of something more herbaceous. The finish is short and sharp, as expected… Read more

Although Cheeky Monkey has been busy expanding their production brewery facility in Vasse, they’ve managed to maintain their creative efforts, which take shape with this trio of September releases. There's a triple IPA brewed in collaboration with the beer-loving Grain Cru team, an IPA that plays to the brewery's strength in executing hazy hop bombs, and a variation on their much-loved Silverback. Although perhaps only a temporary exit from the thick, juicy and lactose-laced beers for which they’re renowned, Cheeky Monkey's 2022 winter seasonal Session Stout pointedly heads into restrained territory: no adjuncts and no, ahem, monkey business… A firm roast is the defining factor in this lacy, pitch black stout. Coffee, a black tea-like bitterness and some soft cocoa are all bolstering flavours, while there’s just a touch of malt-derived sweetness to bring some balance and increase drinkability;… Read more

Given the noise surrounding them, you might think Cheeky Monkey are heavily focused on developing a reputation for brewing juicy, thick fruited sours, but while they're doing that undeniably well, they're still highly capable of putting together delicious, full-flavoured, hop-driven beers. Cheeky Monkey Silverback 2022

Published May 19, 2022
The Crafty writers aren’t exactly sure which iteration of Cheeky Monkey's Silverback 2022 brings, but recent memories of Hyperbole, last year's tequila barrel-aged version, certainly have us excited for the hotly-anticipated yearly release. It seems to be a recurring theme that the Cheeky brewers change the not just the design of Silverback’s packaging, but the size too. Published June 29, 2018
Cheeky Monkey’s winter seasonal, Silverback, returns and has brought company from the troop in the form of two 2017 variants that have spent the past year in barrels. The newest version's screaming, somewhat rabid looking gorilla is ultimately a red herring because in the glass this is far more inviting than the label suggests. Silverback 2018’s tightly coiled, crema-coloured head holds green coffee bean, roasted malt and chocolate aromas while this year’s recipe restraint has allowed the ingredients… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Ri-beer-na Blackcurrant Berliner Weisse

Published May 29, 2018
It appears that the South West of WA is becoming a crucible of sour. The regularity of zippy releases from the region bears testament to this, so it’s of no surprise that Cheeky Monkey’s GABS entry playfully wades into this low ABV territory. Having built a solid reputation with two releases of Frosty Fruit Sour, head brewer Ross Terlick and team return to after school nostalgia with Ri-beer-na, a Blackcurrant Berliner Weisse. Cheeky Monkey Imperial Monk Red IPA

Published March 3, 2018
The Cheeky Monkeys describe Imperial Monk as “our Autumn Seasonal release, which is designed to gently transition you from summer into Autumn”. This genteel gambit refers to an increasingly refined brute now branded with its Autumn 2018 release date. Batch variance is one thing but, with annual releases that use malts from different years, sometimes different regions, and similarly adjusting hops as a result of availability, trend, quality and experimentation, it’s a wonder this practice isn’t… Read more

Cheeky Monkey & Chicho Gelato & Mane Liquor Frosty Fruit Sour

Published November 9, 2017
For beer drinkers, few things can top the wonderfully zippy refreshment of a cold Berliner Weisse on a hot summer’s day. Those below the nation's drinking age would argue that few things can top the fruity, brain-freeze inducing head rush of a tropical Frosty Fruit either. Frosty Fruit's pre-summer release from this trio of collaborators blends these two warm weather joys into a lightly puckering passionfruit, mandarin and lime gelato infused nostalgia trip that raised plenty of smiles and recalled… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Double IPA

Published September 25, 2017
In an increasingly hazy world, Cheeky’s brewing monkeys have bucked the trend and announced the arrival of spring with a straight up double IPA. As the can's evocative label – one of the best yet from the brewery – suggests, this beer is designed to be all about citrus, something the brewers set out to achieve through judicious use of Citra, Mandarina Bavaria and the relatively new Lemon Drop hop. A resinous aroma teases while the taste keeps things tight with light marmalade, a clean but weighty… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Pale Ale – RETIRED

Published July 20, 2017
Cheeky Monkey’s fifth birthday celebrations included a present to themselves: new branding and new recipes. Under the gift wrap were such things as the Travelling Monk Session Red mainstay now packaged in a responsibly sized 375ml can, an award-winning Australian Lager and the debut of this American style Pale Ale. Once an outlier, the West Coast IPA released at Christmas last year now also looks very much a part of its familial troupe, with the tallboy cans saved for single batches such as the… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Imperial Monk

Published February 28, 2017
Cheeky Monkey’s first limited release beer for 2017 shows the Margaret River brewery building momentum for bigger beers. Last year, the limited release Southern Wailer series included the Silverback, a 10 percent ABV imperial stout revived after laying dormant for three years, a West Coast IPA that evolved into a core range beer and a hop forward, multi-collaborator XPA to name a few. Cheeky Monkey Hop Flinger IPA

Published October 12, 2016
As far as images you might want to associate with things you're planning to put in your mouth, a monkey flinging poo probably isn't that high on your list (unless you're a subscriber to niche websites). But, for their latest limited release in cans, Margaret River's Cheeky Monkey has decided to go there, not just calling their IPA Hop Flinger but putting a monkey sat atop a pile of, um, something with hops in it, pulling lumps from said something and hurling them in your general direction. Cheeky Monkey Silverback Stout (cans)

Published July 18, 2016
Having stepped up their canning plans earlier in the year by putting their smallest beer (Travelling Monk) and one of their biggest (an imperial India pale lager) into 500ml cans, WA's Cheeky Monkey is at it again. Cheeky Monkey Southern Wailer IIPL

Published April 21, 2016
Cheeky Monkey recently installed a canning line at its Margaret River home. Up until now it had been used to send three of its core beers around WA: Old Reliable pale, Blonde Capuchin summer ale and Crooked Tales cider. Now they've used it to package one of their Southern Wailer seasonals in a bigger 500ml tinny. And, taking a lead from Pirate Life, they've decided that a bigger tin deserves a bigger beer. Cheeky Monkey & The DTC Dark Secret

Published March 4, 2016
They do love a venue / brewery collaboration in the west. Latest to join forces are the guys from The Dutch Trading Co (The DTC) and Margaret River's Cheeky Monkey. Originally brewed for last month's South West Craft Beer Festival in the region, a full batch was brewed meaning there was enough left over to head to a few bars and bottleshop to fill glasses and growlers. Margaret River's Cheeky Monkey has become the latest Aussie micro to install a canning machine, with the technicians from Cask getting the line in place in time for summer 2015/16. Initially at least, they'll be available in WA only – just like the brewery's draught beers and ciders. Cheeky Monkey Southern Wailer: The Cheeky G

Published September 21, 2015
Sad to admit there's a sense of disappointment around Crafty Towers with the latest seasonal from Cheeky Monkey. Nothing to do with the beer (which we've not actually tasted, just been told about). It all comes down to the photography. Cheeky Monkey Not So Common Stout

Published July 22, 2015
Being the gregarious chap he is, Cheeky Monkey's head brewer Ross Terlick decided to share the creative load at the Margaret River brewery and invited his new assistant Hamish to come up with this winter's edition of their Southern Wailer seasonal releases. It's Hamish's first ever stab at creating a commercial brew from scratch, no less. Cheeky Monkey Southern Wailer #17: Extra Special Belgian

Published February 9, 2015
Having spent a couple of hours in Cheeky Monkey head brewer Ross Terlick's company over the festive period, it's a wonder he gets anything done at this time of year. The brewery venue in Margaret River's popular Caves Road attracts so many guests the core beer tanks empty so fast it's like they've sprung a leak. Cheeky Monkey Blonde Capuchin – RETIRED

Published December 17, 2014
On The Crafty Pint's first visit to Cheeky Monkey in the Margaret River just before it opened, we managed to steer our poky hire car over one of the saplings freshly planted in the car park. On a second visit at Christmas 2014, we were relieved to see the car park trees flourishing and, more importantly, the brewery and venue absolutely cranking too. Cheeky Monkey makes two ciders under the Crooked Tale banner: one pear and one apple. The pear variant is inspired by pear ciders of southwest England, with a fresh acidity from the apples blended into it complimented by the complex characters from a Belgian yeast strain. Cheeky Monkey Travelling Monk – RETIRED

Think of Stone Brewing from the US or BrewDog and you don't automatically think of midstrength red ales. But having worked at the latter and fallen for their 5am Saint – as well as having a soft spot for Stone's Levitation and Little Creatures' Rogers – Red designed the Travelling Monk with them in mind. It may not be the most obvious choice for a flagship beer, even in these fast-evolving times, but when Cheeky Monkey opened, it was a Belgian IPA that head brewer Red chose as the beer to hang his hat on.
