Cheeky Monkey

It's not uncommon in the beer world for prospective brewery owners to experience delays. In fact, when someone tells you they're planning to open a brewery in six months it pays to add on another six. At least. Yet, for all the delays faced by breweries across the land, few - if any - can have experienced as many as the Cheeky Monkey Brewery & Cidery.

By the time they poured their first beer, the brewery's owners had been locked in court battles with the owner of a neighbouring winery for nearly two years. She had argued that the yeasts used in brewing could potentially contaminate the indigenous yeasts at her biodynamic winery, but in April 2012 final approval was granted and Cheeky Monkey opened its doors.

The doors opened onto a venue befitting its location in Caves Road in the heart of the world famous Margaret River region. Designed as a family-friendly destination - complete with a seriously impressive kids play area - it combines a 450-capacity brewery bar and restaurant with a cellar door for Killerby and Ferngrove Wines.

If there was a plus side to the long delay in opening, it's that local boy Jared "Red" Proudfoot, who has since gone on to become one of the founders and head brewers at Pirate Life, had time to spend 18 months brewing at Scottish craft beer giants BrewDog before returning home to head up the brewing side of the business.

After Red moved on, the head brewer mantle passed to Alex Poulsen and then Ross Terlick, who had learnt the ropes at nearby brewery Cowaramup. Under his watch, the brewery became one of the first WA brewers to start putting beers into cans, gradually releasing more and more seasonals and then, in winter 2017, unveiling a new core range – all in colourfully designed cans.

In 2019 came arguably the biggest change since the brewery launched, however, with the opening of a second production facility 25 minutes away in Vasse capable of producing up to four million litres per annum over time. With the move came another rebrand and some tweaks to the core lineup, now in the hands of a new brewery team.

The intention is to not only sell more beer in their home state but also start exploring the East Coast. What's more, a second venue will follow at the Vasse site in the middle of 2019.

Cheeky Monkey Pale Ale

Tapped July 20th, 2017
Cheeky Monkey’s fifth birthday celebrations included a present to themselves: new branding and new recipes. Under the gift wrap were such things as the Travelling Monk Session Red mainstay now packaged in a responsibly sized 375ml can, an award-winning Australian Lager and the debut of this American style Pale Ale. Once an outlier, the West Coast IPA released at Christmas last year now also looks very much a part of its familial troupe, with the tallboy cans saved for single batches such as the… Read more

Margaret River's Cheeky Monkey has become the latest Aussie micro to install a canning machine, with the technicians from Cask getting the line in place in time for summer 2015/16. Initially at least, they'll be available in WA only – just like the brewery's draught beers and ciders. The first three of brewer Ross Terlick's range to get the tinnie treatment are the Old Reliable pale ale, the Blonde Capuchin summer ale and Crooked Tales dry apple cider. Cheeky Monkey Blonde Capuchin – RETIRED

Tapped December 17th, 2014
On The Crafty Pint's first visit to Cheeky Monkey in the Margaret River just before it opened, we managed to steer our poky hire car over one of the saplings freshly planted in the car park. On a second visit at Christmas 2014, we were relieved to see the car park trees flourishing and, more importantly, the brewery and venue absolutely cranking too. Cheeky Monkey makes two ciders under the Crooked Tale banner: one pear and one apple. The pear variant is inspired by pear ciders of southwest England, with a fresh acidity from the apples blended into it complimented by the complex characters from a Belgian yeast strain. The apple cider is based around the Pink Lady apple, with a splash of pear added to round out the the mouthfeel and provide body.… Read more

Cheeky Monkey Travelling Monk – RETIRED

Think of Stone Brewing from the US or BrewDog and you don't automatically think of midstrength red ales. But having worked at the latter and fallen for their 5am Saint – as well as having a soft spot for Stone's Levitation and Little Creatures' Rogers – Red designed the Travelling Monk with them in mind. It's low in alcohol but looks to make up for it with a dry-hopping regime that adds a distinct hop character to the caramel malt flavours and, since Red moved on to pastures Pirate-like, has… Read more

It may not be the most obvious choice for a flagship beer, even in these fast-evolving times, but when Cheeky Monkey opened, it was a Belgian IPA that head brewer Red chose as the beer to hang his hat on. Then again, as someone who had spent 18 months at BrewDog, it was unlikely to be a kolsch... Poor Loki. Fresh out of the new Vasse production facility, Cheeky Monkey’s IIPA 2019 is a very modern expression, aggressively late and dry-hopped with Citra and resinous El Dorado – no Old School hops need apply. However, for all the lupulin bravado, this is just really fun. Silverback’s annual release has become a keenly anticipated winter occurrence in WA. In 2018, the Cheeky Monkey brewers expanded on the OG with a trio of barrel expressions and a vastly simplified recipe.
