It appears that the South West of WA is becoming a crucible of sour. The regularity of zippy releases from the region bears testament to this, so it’s of no surprise that Cheeky Monkey’s GABS entry playfully wades into this low ABV territory. Having built a solid reputation with two releases of Frosty Fruit Sour, head brewer Ross Terlick and team return to after school nostalgia with Ri-beer-na, a Blackcurrant Berliner Weisse.
One can’t help but giggle at the lurid magenta ribbon that falls into the glass, as any questions about a ho-hum, pop culture beer knock off is crushed by the weight of 400kg of Tasmanian blackcurrants. On tasting, a bold tartness is soon flushed with fruit – mountains of it – before an interesting but welcome tannic character runs through the middle palate, lingering as the blackcurrant recedes.
