Once upon a time, both brown and amber ales were quite a frequent sight in Australia (remember the sucess of Mountain Goat's Hightail?) but skip forward to the 2020s and they've become a rare find. That's despite them appearing to still have something of a tap presence in America, with a recent trip to the States reminding me of the pure pleasure of a beer that's malt and hop-led at one time.
It's a feeling that was instantly revived when I cracked open a tin of Molly Rose's Why Not A Brown Ale, an American brown ale first brewed in 2022 and returning to for 2023, albeit with a slight switch from the original Indian brown ale style name. The beer's filled with a rich mix of caramel and sweet biscuit that comes wrapped in hop notes of pinneaple, pine and grapefruit. Come on Australian brewers: given brown ales another go (this is not financial advice).
