Beerland Brewing

In 2014, the Northbridge Brewing Co opened its doors to a thirsty Perth public. Building on this success, three years later a sister venue, the Whitfords Brewing Co, opened as part of a $70m redevelopment in one of Perth's largest shopping centres.

With beers flowing at two established venues and periodically throughout other WA venues, it’s time for Beerland Brewing to take centre stage.

Beerland Brewing is the name for the breweries behind the twin venues, on operation that turned heads when it collected the prestigious AIBA Champion Australian Beer trophy in 2018 for the Beerland Wheat.

Operating across both venues, where you'll find steam driven 12 hectolitre brew kits that, as of mid 2018, were producing a combined 300,000 litres of beer a year.

Helmed by master brewer Ken Arrowsmith, a man with nearly 40 years brewing experience, mostly at Swan where he lent (and still does) his image to Emu Bitter cans, at the Northbridge site he's supported by brewer and Certified Cicerone Andrew Dean while, at Whitfords, brewer Thomas Fleay brings experience from a career has taken him around Australia.

This tight team is complemented by a dude, but not just any dude. Sabhan Rizzi is the "Beer Dude" responsible for getting Beerland beer to the rest of WA. With scope for up to 24 limited release beers every year to play with (12 from each brewpub), plus coordinating the "beer challengers" at the venues' monthly Beer Club events, Sabs is quite a busy man, sorry, dude.

The core range of five beers includes the Champion Wheat beer as well as a Lager, Kolsch, Pale Ale and IPA that have all garnered a medal or trophy along the way. These are supported by a monthly limited release schedule that allows the brewers to run free.

And run free they have, with limited releases including everything from an Umeshu Gose and a bourbon barrel aged American brown ale to a number of New England IPAs and the blink-and-you'll-miss-it annual Mango Wheat. These beers allow the brewers to collaborate with the kitchen for monthly Beer Club events, the annual Chilli Week and occasional beer degustations.

Having the two sites 25 kilometres apart also allows the team to design recipes to suit their individual clientele as well as swapping kegs between the venues. Notably, Whitfords' opening ESB beer has proven very popular with the north corridor's expats.

Beerland Brewing beers can be enjoyed at both venues as well as at select locations around Perth. Takeaway CANimals are also available for purchase at each venue along with a range of merchandise.

With awards piling up, demand increasing and on-trend seasonals appearing with greater frequency, it seems highly likely you'll be seeing more Beerland beers flowing from taps outside the brewpubs where they're created.

Beerland IPA

The biggest beer in the core range found at Beerland's brewpubs is, again, designed to be as much an introduction to the style rather than a palate-bashing, olfactory-filling hop bomb. It's evolved over time, with the weapons of choice on the hop front at time of writing two of the beer world's favourites: Aussie Galaxy and American Mosaic. They deliver a familiar melange of lively fruity characters, citrusy, tropical and a little piney, all leading to a slightly resinous bitter end.… Read more

Beerland Pale Ale

The Beerland Pale Ale is what you might call a drinking pale ale. Sure, there's some floral, citrus and tropical fruit aromas and flavours derived from the Aussie Galaxy and Cascade hops, but they're kept in check rather than running riot, balanced by some light caramel sweetness and a slowly building bitterness. It sits in a similar part of the pale ale spectrum to a beer from a waterfront brewery not too far down the road that's done rather well for itself; an approachable and sessionable take… Read more

Beerland Lager

Given its aim to act as a gateway brewpub more than a beer geek hangout – one where they'd like to take you on a journey through the beer spectrum but have some commercial lagers on tap too if that's where you want to go – much of the core range sits within safe parameters. Thus, alongside the Kolsch you'll also find this Lager. It's designed with classic European lagers in mind, built upon German malts and European hops to create a simple mix of cracker like malt flavours, gentle floral aromas… Read more

Beerland Kolsch

Like stablemate Wheat, Beerland's Kolsch takes its lead from Germany, in particular the lager like pale ales from Cologne. It pours a clear pale gold, offers up a touch of apple/pear fruitiness from the ale yeast, some light, biscuity malts and a touch of balancing bitterness. The brewers have used some European noble hops to add a touch of spiciness to a beer designed to slip down easily on Perth's many hot days.… Read more

Beerland Wheat

In our experience, the WA beer audience has a greater fondness for wheat beers than any other in Australia. You'll find some form of hefeweizen or witbier style ale pouring at most of the state's brewpubs and NBC is no exception, even offering up a mango version as one of its returning seasonals. This permanent pour is one of several beers in the Beerland core range designed with easy drinking in mind. Pale golden in colour, it delivers a touch of banana and some spicy clove like aromas with light,… Read more

Beerland Brewing Acid Wolf

Tapped November 13th, 2018
As the temperatures in WA edge towards the mid-20s, a pack of more crushable New World sours is starting to appear. We say "New World" as you can trace a lineage to classic puckering styles yet modern brewing techniques and punter tastes have rounded off the edges, so to speak, positioning these beers in more approachable territory than the battery acid like pH levels of some predecessors. For Beerland, Acid Wolf’s use of the modern lactic Sour Pitch yeast delivers a perfect example of… Read more

Beerland & Dainton Dom Passignon Brut IPA

Tapped October 4th, 2018
Recent commentary about the vinification of beer may be one thing but this makes a strong case, brutish perhaps, that the implied riddling of beer has tickled the zeitgeist more than a Nik Kershaw hit at an 80s party. Certainly, Dom Passignon’s decal carries the élan and excess of high end, carbonated grape juice, then delivers effortlessly on a Passion Pop budget. To this end, the collaborators used passionfruit puree in a souped up Brut IPA with an SRM level approaching the French icon it's… Read more

Beerland Brewing Brutal IPA

Tapped August 20th, 2018
The reveal of the new Beerland Brut IPA during August's Beer Club blind tasting highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of this most nascent of styles. While Brutal IPA was celebrated by all for its white wine like characters, refined poise and drinkability, unfortunately the same couldn't be said of some of its stylistic peers. Whereas hazy New England style IPAs offer visual cues of quality to discerning drinkers, typically losing their brightness and developing a tired, murky look, it seems that… Read more

Beerland Brewing Run Of The Mill IPA

Tapped July 25th, 2018
In one of their more interesting recent releases, Beerland Brewing has taken inspiration from the rye bread beverage kvass. This fermented bread drink is popular in Slavic and Baltic countries as well as throughout Russia, where its low ABV – typically under 1 percent – sees it positioned as something like a soft drink, especially when flavoured with fruit. Although drawing upon such historical influences, Run of the Mill takes a decidedly more contemporary path in the form of an IPA. Albany… Read more

Beerland Brewing Smoke And A Pancake Brown Ales

Tapped June 25th, 2018
"Would you like a smoke and a pancake?" Just as the courteous velour-clad Dutch villain, Goldmember, welcomed Austin Powers in the 2002 Mike Myers vehicle, so do the Beerland Brewing team for their June 2018 limited release, albeit with King Gee-styled brewers' shirts; I’m pretty confident Ken Arrowsmith isn’t signing off on any fluffy shell-suits just for this release. Or should that be "releases"? “Twins, Basil. Twins” Smoke And A Pancake is the brewery’s first foray… Read more

Beerland Brewing Habanero IPA

Tapped June 1st, 2018
This year sees Northbridge Brewing Co’s annual festival of burning pepper heat, Chilli Week, expand to include its sister venue, the Whitfords Brewing Co. And, to mark the return of this scovillicoius occasion, Beerland Brewing has marked the occasion with a fiery take on their core range West Coast IPA. Known for their citrusy flavour, the habanero chilli addition - 100 grams per 50 litre keg - makes its presence known from the first sniff. There's little doubt that the story – or at least the one that will have blindsided most people – at the 2018 Australian International Beer Awards was the huge swag of trophies taken out by Beerland Brewing, the brewing side of the Northbridge Brewing Co and Whitfords brewpub in Perth. With twin breweries it's an operation with plenty of new releases on the schedule and, as many other Australian breweries are releasing red IPAs and brown ales that line up neatly with autumn’s cool slide into… Read more

Beerland Alte Schule Dunkel Kellerbier

Tapped April 26th, 2018
Another month brings another Beerland limited release, this time one brewed at Whitfords Brewing Co. Alte Schule, or Old School, is a kellerbier, a title that refers to the cool cellars (keller) which, at one stage, would have been where unfiltered lagers were fermented ready to be served directly from a wooden cask in a tavern or beer garden. This hazy brown lager with ruby highlights delivers nutty and slightly toasted malts balanced by honeycomb sweetness. The Tettnanger hops provide a little… Read more

It’s surprising that witbiers aren’t more pervasive. For many, the Redbacks and Hoegaardens of the 90s kickstarted a journey into a new world of beer and, for some breweries, it’s a style that’s helped drive empires – looking at you Blue Moon. Beerland Brewing Co Juice Willis NEIPA

Following the success of and acclaim for 2017 limited release James Street Juice, the Beerland Brewing family has stepped back into the highly aromatic but turbid whirlpool of the NEIPA. Never afraid of a good beer pun, Juice Willis borrows from the on screen tough guy, comedian and occasional musician Walter Bruce Willis and potentially opens the door for a third in the series, Juice Harder. The Northbridge Brewing Co starts its 2018 small batch program with the most interesting release of the four-year-old brewery’s life to date: an umeboshi gose. The melding of umeboshi, a pickled Japanese salty plum that resembles a tiny apricot with the recently revived German specialty beer style has been an 18 month skunkworks project for brewer Andrew Dean. The long gestation period was due to achieving the right balance of sweet, salty and sour characters in test batches, which ultimately… Read more
