South Australia’s iconic FruChocs have completed another spin around the sun, which comes, as always, with Fruchocs Appreciation Day. And, of more recent vintage, a collaboration with Big Shed. In 2023, it's something of a milestone birthday for the sweet treat too, as FruChocs clock up 75 years.
Having been summoned to create a collaborative beer worthy of the occasion, the Royal Park brewers opted for an apricot stout, added apricot and peach to a 6.6 percent ABV milk chocolate stout.
And replicate the original it does. The apricot is integrated well, with fleshy, earthy fruit wrapping itself around a milky chocolate stout base. There's a slight tartness and texture from the apricot but these are balanced out by the lactose. Milky chocolate sweetness rides throughout in a beer that never lets up on sweetness, leaving you with the conclusion that the only thing that tastes more like FruChocs is the chocolate itself.
