For many, Bali may as well be one of Perth’s northern suburbs. As a result, it’s curious that a beer such as this has taken so long to come along to service a very thirsty audience. Kura Kura are one of a small clutch of independent, Balinese-owned breweries on the tropical island and, as this collab with Gage Roads shows, they’re very much driven by a shared coastal lifestyle.
Employing Citra, Cryo Krush and Nelson Sauvin Hop Kief, the surf-loving pair have landed on a beer reminiscent of Single Fin, yet with more slightly more body and tropical character. They note guava, mango, passionfruit and lime, and while there’s passing evidence of each, the intent is very much to create a beer with low bitterness suited for casual quaffing, most likely as the wetsuit drips dry post-surf session.
