KAIJU!’s Mutation Program of limited releases has itself mutated, with the series getting a fresh new look. The new style comes courtesy of the design agency TRiC and taps into a healthy dose of sci-fi nostalgia with Tron, Isaac Asimov book covers, Stranger Things and Choose Your Own Adventure all where my mind went. So while they might not feature monsters or actual mutants, as these first two cans show, it's a look that remains unmistakably KAIJU-esque. In particular, #0012 couldn't be more of a KAIJU! beer, with Dank Lord Vol. 1 the kind of bold West Coast that led founders Nat and Callum Reeves into the brewing game. The artwork looks to be inspired by some of the stickiest and ickiest hops out there and their presence is certainly felt as waves of fresh pine and citrus crash across a bright and bitter IPA that is wonderfully balanced.
The Situation might feature the same layout but such is the power of juicy beer that its colour palate screams hazy DIPA. Here, it’s all about fresh fruit notes with nectarine syrup, passionfruit, mango and orange juice a whole lot softer than The Situation himself.
