Stomping Ground Brewing Co

It is a little known piece of Australian brewing history that, in the late 1800s, the Collingwood neighbourhood had as many as 40 breweries, the highest density ever in Australia, before amalgamations and buyouts saw them all closed by the early 1900s.

While this little slice of history is not often discussed, it was certainly in the minds of Stomping Ground founders Steve Jeffares, Guy Greenstone and their new partner (and longtime venue manager) Justin Joiner, when trying to find a name for their very own brewery and beer hall. The 1500 square metre space on the corner of Gipps and Islington Streets is the realisation of a dream the trio have had for quite some time: to give Collingwood a brewery again, and deliver a new local for people in the process. A new stomping ground, if you will.

The much loved and awarded branches of The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst and St Kilda have given the trio the space to tap an incredibly diverse range of outstanding beers they wish everyone was drinking, and the ever growing GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland has paved the way for breweries to experiment with ingredients like never before. But, for Steve, Guy and Justin there has always been a gap – they wanted to brew their own great beer, create a venue inspired by the many world class breweries and brewpubs they have visited overseas, and provide an exceptional beer experience for as many people as possible.

The search for the right building took far longer than they wished, as always seems to be the way. But, in 2014, they found the one they’d been waiting for and, after more than 18 months of bureaucracy and planning, set about converting the sawtooth roofed warehouse into an industrial style beer hall, garden and restaurant, and installing the highly regarded Matt Marinich as venue manager. All those spaces have a view of the brewery’s tanks and are set around a vast central bar from which the custom tap fonts and hand pumps can pour as many as 26 of Stomping Ground Brewing Co’s creations (and occasionally those of guest breweries) at one time.

Despite the swathes of exposed brick, steel, glass and recycled timber, the entire venue is bright, airy and welcoming, thanks in large part to the partially retractable roof over the beer garden, where metal chairs, communal tables and a kid’s playhouse made from recycled materials demonstrate the venue’s "come one, come all" nature.

This is a place you could as easily have lunch with your grandmother, sister and your sister’s five kids as you could settle in for a beer tasting session with a few mates on a Saturday night. The menu offers up a broad range of dishes, from your classic pub burger and pizzas straight from their Italian wood oven, to more refined plates such as roasted pumpkin, mussels, and seasonal salads.

But if it’s the beer you’re keen on, what is it you’d be tasting?

Stomping Ground offers a wide range of beer styles with the intention to offer something for everyone – wherever you are on your beer journey. Since opening, head brewer Ashur Hall tried his hand at dozens of beer styles, including the popular Laneway Lager, Gipps St Pale Ale, One Eyed IPA and Bearbrass Nitro Milk Stout. But, with customers lapping up the variety of beers on offer, they've been joined by beers as diverse as a rauchbier collaboration with Stone & Wood, a double IPA named after Hawthorn AFL legend Robert "Dipper" DiPierdomenico, a Berliner Weisse with added syrups, and more besides.

Taking on board lessons from their venues and festival, the team has chosen to categorise beers as either easy drinking, intermediate or challenging to help you navigate the wide selection too.

Before opening their doors in August 2016, and to ensure Ashur was on the same page as them, Steve and Guy took their brewer for a trip Stateside, introducing him to some of the US breweries and bars that had so inspired their latest venture. These were venues that hit a sweet spot between being a beer lover’s dream venue and somewhere locals could claim as their own.

That commitment to a wider vision should ensure Stomping Ground doesn't lose sight of its core goal – to return a slice of brewing history to Collingwood.

Whether on tap or limited-release tins, Stomping Ground always have some new beers on the go. But when it comes to adding something to their core range, or Stripes family, they like to make sure they have them dialled in. That neverending quest for perfection feels all that more necessary when you’re talking about alcohol-free beer, where a bit too much bitterness, sweetness or aromatics throws the whole thing off-kilter. As with many of their peers, one of the ways in which Stomping Ground adapted to the time of COVID-19 was to start canning more of their beers – both limited releases and some that had been around for years but only in draught form. Upside Down Brown sits in the latter category: a popular pour at their brewpub in Collingwood but the sort of beer likely to be nudged down the: "What shall we can next?" discussion list in pre-pandemic, pro-hop days. With eleven stores and another set to open before the end of the year, Blackhearts & Sparrows are getting craft beer (not to mention fine wine and spirits) into a lot of hands. As the business has grown, they’ve also looked to collaborate with more of the producers they stock, offering their staff a chance to understand what goes into the bottles and cans on their shelves. The latest of those collaborations is with Stomping Ground, giving the bottleshop’s Gore Street head office the chance… Read more

Stomping Ground & BOB Bar Laughing Matter

Published April 5, 2019
At the rate they've been going in their first couple of years of existence, forging partnerships left, right and centre across Melbourne, there's a good chance that, come 2030, the city will have been renamed Stomping Ground and we'll be living in some sort of Being John Malkovich-esque reality. The latest step along that road for the Collingwood-based operation sees them hook up with BOB Bar, a pop-up venue opened by Triple J alumni Alex Dyson and Kyran Wheatley for the duration of the Melbourne… Read more

The local beer world's naming game is strong at the minute, with this beer created by Stomping Ground and Melbourne good time joint Heartbreaker bearing one of the best puns around – one that anyone who's spent time enjoying the DJs and jukebox at the CBD bar will appreciate works on many levels. Stomping Ground La Boca Pilsner

Published December 11, 2018
They love a partnership at Stomping Ground, especially when it gives them a chance to put their beers – and craft beer generally – in front of a new audience. For summer 2018, that's led the Collingwood operation to hook up with Arts Centre Melbourne to host a pop-up bar on the forecourt while Evita takes up residency inside. And, as well as stacking a couple of colourful containers atop each other from which to service theatre-goers and passers-by, they've create a beer. La Boca is a pilsner,… Read more

Stomping Ground Bunker Porter

Published August 10, 2018
The crew behind Stomping Ground has always seen the brewpub as a continuation or renaissance of its home 'burb's brewing traditions and, with the Bunker Porter – so named due to a legend there's a wartime bunker below their Collingwood home, there's a visual nod to beers of the past too. On the outside, it looks like a beer that could have come from a local brewery decades ago – or, indeed, one from the UK – and what's inside the cans doesn't deviate from tradition either. Utterly impenetrable… Read more

Stomping Ground Sour Red Saison

Published August 10, 2018
A "high-performance" souring bacteria, a fruity saison yeast strain, specialty malts and some fruity new wave European hops... If that's not a combination to deliver a journey for your senses, then little will. Taking Lallemand Brewing's Sour Pitch, a French saison yeast and pungently citrusy Lemon Drop and Mandarina Bavaria hops, the Stomping Ground brewers have turned out a beer with a nose that's both vinous and full of candied berries, flavours that flit between those berries, blood… Read more

Stomping Ground Kompromat Russian Imperial Stout 2018

Published August 10, 2018
The cans have been flying out of Stomping Ground's Collingwood brewery over the past six months or so and now they've got some wax-sealed company in the shape of Kompromat, a bourbon barrel aged Russian imperial stout. It's built from no less than eight grains and a trio of US hops, although it's the time spent on oak that's the defining character. You're met with aromas of coconut, hazelnuts, cocoa and vanilla, and there's a boozy sweetness running through its midst on the palate, enveloped by rich… Read more

Since opening its doors, the Stomping Ground Beer Hall has poured a serious number of different beer styles across its taps, thanks to the efforts of head brewer Ashur Hall and his team. Stomping Ground Astra Man Fresh Hop Pale Ale

Published March 3, 2018
Every ingredient in beery glass of beer plays a crucial role. Without getting the balance right, you're not going to end up with a delicious beer. Yet, there’s arguably no time of the year more exciting for many brewers as one that focuses on one ingredient alone: hop harvest. The huge rise in the number of wet hopped beers – brewed with hops transported to the brewery as soon as they've been plucked from their bines – is a clear a sign of the fascination harvest holds for both brewers and… Read more

Stomping Ground Watermelon Smash

Published February 16, 2018
Collingwood brewery Stomping Ground launched its first tinnies over the festive period with flagship brew Gipps St Pale and Midsumma Festival collab PRIDElweiss. Now, while the mercury is still (mostly) high, they've sent their first seasonal out into the world. And it's a beer that's very much of its time: a fruit sour. This one takes the gently soured and salted gose style as its starting point and then adds watermelon. We're not sure how much watermelon went into each batch (the canned version… Read more

Stomping Ground & Tequila Tromba Paloma Gose

As inspirations for new beers go, honouring International Paloma Appreciation Week has to rank as one of the more reaching. What next, a vanilla milk stout in memory of Ouyen's Great Vanilla Slice Triumph, which, sadly, ran for the last time six years ago this month? Still, if you're reading this and didn't know about Palomas beforehand, they're a Mexican cocktail featuring tequila and grapefruit found "so often living in the shadow of the world famous margarita", according to the info… Read more
