As we head towards the end of 2023, Mash welcome a new series. Yesterday’s is set to explore bygone tastes through a modern beer lens, launching here with possibly the most overt debut to hit West Australia in recent memory. And speaking of memory, this one’s liquid nostalgia triggers hard: Lolly Shop fills its surroundings with the sweet fog of musk.
Wisely, the Swan Valley brewers have left any mention of the possibly polarising musk off the label, but there’s no mistaking what’s there once it hits the glass. Imagine musk Lifesavers and candy sticks in beer form, complete with wildly floral aromatics plus a hint of strawberry and vanilla... A zippy edge refreshes, making a can of Lolly Shop an achievable prospect rather than a 50ml GABS-style measure.
Credit for innovation goes to brewer Craig Hill, whose research into 1850s confectionary musk-making has resulted in the secret ingredients that buoy this delightfully playful recipe, something that’s a halo for much of Mash’s 2023 output.
