New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Van Dieman Hedgerow Autumn Ale 2012

Tapped April 13th, 2012
Anyone that's enjoyed the previous edition of Van Dieman's take on harvest ales - using harvested rose hips, hawthorn and sloe berries from around the family farm rather than freshly harvest hops - will be in for something of a surprise this time around. Whereas in the past, there was the addition of a subtle forest fruits like character to a soft, malt-led English style ale, in 2012 it's all about the funk. Instead of racking the beer over the farm pickings for six weeks, brewer Will racked them… Read more

Grand Ridge WHOA!

Tapped March 30th, 2012
When flicking through the results booklet after last year's Australian International Beer Awards, a name jumped out from the crowd, the WHOA! from Grand Ridge. It had medalled but we'd never heard of it. Now the mystery is solved as it's been bottled and released around this year's hop harvest. The WHOA! stands for wet hopped oatmeal ale, meaning it's brewed with fresh hops from the brewery's own collection and uses a little oatmeal in the grain mix. The result on the hop front is rather subtle -… Read more

Mornington Peninsula White IPA

Tapped March 21st, 2012
We've had straight IPAs, double IPAs, black IPAs, rye IPAs. Now it's time for Australia's first White IPA. The latest cab off the rank at Mornington Peninsula is a hybrid between a Belgian Wit and an American IPA that brewer AG first read about in an American brewing magazine. Apparently it was first brewed as a collaboration between Deschutes and Boulevard Brewing, who specialise in Belgian beers. He says: "The idea is too have a souped up version of a witbier, citrus hops complementing coriander… Read more

Murray's Libertine

Tapped March 21st, 2012
Murray's brewers Shawn Sherlock and Ian Watson unveiled a range of rather extraordinary Belgian styles at a dinner this month. Of these, only the Libertine is on wider release, found on draught at Manly and good beer venues. Given the brewery has its residence at a place called Bob's Farm, perhaps it's fitting that they should release a farmhouse style ale. At a relatively light 5 per cent, this isn't a heavy-hitter in the mould of so many modern farmhouse ales. It was brewed to be fairly light,… Read more

4 Pines Keller Door Series 2012: St Pats Stouts

Tapped March 16th, 2012
The second in the 4 Pines series of multiple releases sees them switch from showcasing hops to showcasing rather darker beers. In tribute to St Patrick's Day, Keller Door 2 sees them unveiling a Dry Irish Stout (which is also pouring on the hand pump at their Manly venues) alongside an Oatmeal Stout, Choc Orange Stout and Russian Imperial Stout. The beers have been tapped at Manly to kickstart their Paddy's Day Weekend festivities, while others are currently winging their way around the country's… Read more

Little Creatures Wet Hopped Pale Ale

Tapped March 16th, 2012
Brewing this beer was a little like the Amazing Race for hops, as you can read about in the story we ran on it here. Little Creatures wanted to see what their flagship would taste like when brewed with freshly harvested hops instead of dried flowers, ending up putting 100kg into the hopback where usually there would be 25kg. The result is a surprisingly different beer, one that's nailed spot on by the head brewer, in that the hops are rather conspicuous by their absence on the nose but appear with… Read more

Mountain Goat Saison

Tapped March 2nd, 2012
Tis the year of the saison, it seems. Where once there was hardly an Aussie take on the farmhouse style to be found outside Beechworth, the Otways and wherever Ron from Temple was laying his hat at any particular time, now it's all the rage, whether as the launch beer from newcomer La Sirí¨ne, a seasonal from Moo, in various forms from Murray's or now as a potential regular from Mountain Goat. Their first version leans to the fruity, citrusy end of things, although has been poured through the likes… Read more

Moon Dog Melon Gibson

Tapped February 25th, 2012
The opening salvo in what will become Moon Dog's Magnificent Mullet series of beers, created in tribute to one of the great hairdos of the past (or concocted after sampling some of their own product, perhaps). The three beers are all kind of witbier-y and kind of Berliner Weisse-y thanks to the addition of a wee bit of wild yeast. In the case of Melon Gibson, the defining factor is the, you've guessed it, melon - or watermelon, to be precise. The boys hacked more than 100kg to pieces using some sort… Read more

4 Pines Spiced Ale 2011

Tapped February 21st, 2012
Towards the end of last year, the crew at 4 Pines got into the festive spirit and laid down a very small batch of Christmas Ale. Alas, Christmas came and went with no sign of the beer. It remained firmly locked in its stainless steel prison, closely guarded but knowing its release was imminent. That time has finally come. Since it is now February, the specialty brew has been renamed 'Spiced Ale' and in terms of a description, it pretty much is what it says. In a way, having this Spiced Ale in February… Read more

Mountain Goat Return of The Craig

Tapped February 15th, 2012
Guess who's back? Back again? Craig is back. Back again. etc. Yes, a beer from the man himself, Craig. If you don't recall its first appearance, we had this to say: So, there's a brewer at Mountain Goat called Craig. Craig was tasked to create a beer. He chose to brew a pale ale, using Willamette hops to stand out from the herd. When the time came to tap the beer, it needed a name. 'What shall we call it?â? said the Goats. 'How about The Craig?â? came the reply. 'No. We're not calling it The… Read more

Bridge Road Pride of Ringwood IPA

Tapped February 10th, 2012
It either says we've got a long way to go to develop our nasal skills or that even the much-maligned Pride of Ringwood hop can get fruity when given the chance to shine. The traditional Aussie hop used for bitterness in many mainstream beers - and more craft ones than you might imagine - is viewed by some in the local beer world as the equivalent of a Dutch oven - and not the thick-walled one used for cooking. Yet it's been undergoing something of a revival, with Temple using it and (almost) nothing… Read more

Red Hill Belgian Blonde 2012

Tapped February 2nd, 2012
Despite the fact they've just taken delivery of a spanking new bottling line, the good sorts down at Red Hill haven't let their brewing schedule slide, meaning their late summer seasonal, the rather tasty Belgian Blonde is out and about. Actually, not quite out and about - such is demand for their beers these days that they only managed to squeeze in the one batch this year, meaning it's on at the brewery and the brewery only. Expect plenty of rich biscuity malt characters, hints of spice and a touch… Read more

Holgate Bruges Bombshell

Tapped January 30th, 2012
A beer that was originally going to be called the Clock Tower, until in the week it went into tank the brewers at Holgate noticed that True South was releasing an IPA with the same name. So back to the drawing board it was and up came the Bruges Bombshell. Why? Well, because it's a bolshy Belgian style ale and Bruges is in Belgium, where head brewer Paul Holgate had just been on holiday and... you get the message. So what of the beer? Well, we're told it's "full flavoured but easy drinking with… Read more

Cowaramup Lightsign

Tapped January 28th, 2012
The current holder of the Champion Lager trophy from the Australian International Beer Awards (awarded for his excellent pilsner) doesn't release new beers very often. Jeremy Good, the co-founder and brewer at Cowaramup in WA's Margaret River region, prefers instead to work on perfecting his range of traditional English and German styles. Yet, in a rare break from cover, he has knocked up a batch of a beer for summer that takes its name from an idea his daughter Bethany had years ago when they were… Read more

Bridge Road Summer IPA

Tapped January 23rd, 2012
The Bridge Road crew are getting together a nice line in single Aussie hop IPAs, with the Summer following the hugely popular Galaxy and relative newcomer Stella off the rank - and with the unlikely Pride of Ringwood IPA to follow. Summer is a hop variety formerly known as Summer Saaz and has been developed by Hop Products Australia. Those who've ploughed into the Galaxy and Stella IPAs will find this one much more subtle; don't expect to be blown away by pungent aromas, instead it's a gentler, floral… Read more

Mountain Goat The Hoeff

Tapped January 20th, 2012
Goat's annual Hefe-cum-Hasselhoff is back for the summer. It's a true to style take on the hefes you find in Southern Germany - think clove and banana aromas, a touch of bubblegum sweetness and a somewhat dry finish in a cloudy beer with minimal bitterness designed for maximum hot weather refreshment. That, or designed for washing down bucketloads of weisswurst for breakfast if you want to be a traditionalist. Mind you, start down that road and you'll soon be wearing lederhosen, putting feathers… Read more

Temple Midnight IPA (Retired)

Tapped January 13th, 2012
When this beer was offered up as a single keg taster at a trade event in 2010, it was the pick of pretty much everyone in the room. One chap with about as senior a role in the Australian brewing industry described it as faultless - not something he would give up easily. More importantly, it was delicious. And now, back as the final member of the Temple permanent range, it still is. Deeply dark and with powerfully pungent piney (that's enough "p's" thanks) hop aromas that greet you well… Read more

Mountain Goat Goldilocks (2012)

Tapped January 13th, 2012
Another of the summer specials from Goat that debuted last year is back, the Styrian Goldings hopped Goldilocks. As the name suggests, it's a golden ale (summer ale if you like) with one aim and one aim only - being quaffed. Light floral hops and an easy-going malt character make it reminiscent of the sort of ales consumed by the gallon in British beer gardens in the two weeks that constitutes a British summer, while it seems to us (if memory serves us correctly) that the bitterness has been reined… Read more

4 Pines Keller Door Series 2012: Single Hops

Tapped January 9th, 2012
The first of a what will be a series of releases throughout 2012 from the brewing team at 4 Pines, in which they simultaneously showcase four beers that share a theme. The concept is launched with the Single Hop series, which we wrote about on Crafty late last year. The four beers have been brewed with an identical malt bill (95% Ale, 4% Wheat, 1% Crystal) with the only difference being the choice of hop. The four varieties being used are Amarillo - an aromatic American hop synonymous with APAs and… Read more
