New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

4 Pines Bastard Children of the British Empire

Tapped March 30th, 2015
One can never accuse the crew at 4 Pines of lacking ambition. They've rapidly grown to become one of the biggest craft breweries in Australia and have managed their growing pains so well their beers continue to win trophies, all while maintaining a sense of joy and mischief. And now they've released their most ambitious Keller Door release to date. Not content with releasing one new beer, they've conjured five that are being sold in eye-catching, no-expense-spared six-packs following their launch… Read more

Bright Brewery Hop Harvest Ale 2015

Tapped March 28th, 2015
Here they come: the 2015 hop harvest, fresh hop, wet hop beer brigade! There will be a few on display this weekend (March 28) when Bridge Road hosts the first High Country Hops Festival, among them this from Bright. The story behind the beer is as follows... "At Bright Brewery we are very lucky to be only a few minutes down the road from one of Australia’s major hop farms, run by Hop Products Australia (HPA). Over the last couple of years the HPA Rostrevor Hop Garden in Eurobin has produced… Read more

Red Hill Brewery The Bloody Plums

Tapped March 28th, 2015
To mark ten years of brewing in Red Hill, Karen and David Golding and their team are brewing ten different red beers. Each will feature artwork by a different local artist, with beer number one – The Bloody Plums – featuring some colourful work by Nick Kallincos. It also features plums from the big plum tree that is part of the farm on the Mornington Peninsula where they've been welcoming guests since 2005. It's not the reddest of beers, but definitely has a tinge of blood orange to its cloudy… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Hop Harvest Ale 2015

Tapped March 28th, 2015
There's a mini rush of new beers coming out of the Two Birds Nest this month, including a couple of Women of Beer brews and this, their first fresh hop harvest beer. To create the beer, they arranged to have Ella and Galaxy hops plucked from the bines, packaged and flown to their Spotswood home ready to be added to a brew as fresh as possible. The Two Birds reckon it's "the truest expression of hops and a rare opportunity to enjoy the unique character of wet hops, in all their green, leafy glory"… Read more

Cavalier Brewing New World Pilsner & Hop Trap Belgian IPA

Tapped March 26th, 2015
Proving that they do indeed still have time to brew their own beers while still accommodating what sometimes seems like half of the Victorian beer industry at their Sunshine home, Cavalier is back with not one but two new beers. The first, a New World Pilsner, was offered up as a teaser at the recent Good Beer Week Gala Showcase and is one that has been given plenty of time in which to develop. The pale straw coloured beer featuring Kiwi Motueka and Wai-iti hops spent eight weeks in tank before being… Read more

Stone & Wood New Season Pacific Ale

Tapped March 21st, 2015
Year round, it's the beer that showcases the Galaxy hop better than any other and now Stone & Wood is offering fans close to its Byron Bay / Northern River homes a chance to taste it with the freshest hops possible. A phalanx of young brewers and reps from the ever-expanding NSW brewery headed to the hop fields of Tasmania to see Galaxy (and its sisters) on home territory. According to one, Hugh Doyle: "I will never forget breaking apart the plucked Galaxy hop from the bine. The smell… Read more

Holgate Brewhouse / Mountain Goat White Tail

Tapped March 20th, 2015
Aside from Grand Ridge, Mountain Goat and Holgate Brewhouse are the longest established Victorian microbreweries. The former turns 18 later this year, while Holgate is well into its 16th year. And now the combined 30-odd-year-olds have joined forces for their first collaboration, a collaboration based around their first beers. Goat's first beer was the Hightail, while Holgate launched with an ESB and White Ale, the latter based on Hoegaarden. And, as the name suggests, it is the Dutch-inspired brew… Read more

Pirate Life Throwback IPA

Tapped March 20th, 2015
There's been much debate about the term "session IPA" in the beer world. It seems that a lot of people get rather hot and bothered about what it means, whether it has any validity or is just a marketing swizz, and that the cause of humanity would be advanced if the two words were never uttered in unison ever again. Seems to us there are more pressing matters to get worked up about but if we were to just assume that session IPA is here to stay as a descriptor then what should it be? We'd… Read more

Modus Operandi / Royal Albert The Dopey One

Tapped March 19th, 2015
The Royal Albert Hotel and Modus Operandi seem to be getting on rather well. The former has been pouring one or another of the latter’s beers almost every day since MO started exporting beyond Mona Vale and into Sydney proper. The Albert is also the only place outside the brewery to have one of Modus’ infamous CANimal machines behind the bar. If it wasn’t clear that these guys are already BFFs, they’ve now gone and made a beer together which, in brewing terms, pretty much means they’re… Read more

Young Henrys Esther's Ale

Tapped March 17th, 2015
Young Henrys Esther’s Ale is named after head brewer Richard Adamson’s grandmother Esther who, come St Patrick’s Day 2015, would have been turning a grand old 99 years of age. In true St Paddy’s style, Esther’s Ale is a stout, but in true Young Henrys style it’s no normal stout. Developed by young brewer Agnes as part of the Young Henrys’ program which sees all their up and coming brewers create a recipe for commercial release, this is a Red Velvet Stout. Murray's Brewing Scratchley's Itch

Tapped March 16th, 2015
So, a brewer, a motorcycle company owner, a tattoo artist and a promoter walk into a bar... But this is no dumb joke, it’s the cast of characters who conspired on the latest collaboration brew from Murray’s. The beer is called Scratchley’s Itch, a play on Fort Scratchley, the historical and iconic Newcastle fort which dominates the entrance to the Hunter River. In a similar vein to Stone & Wood’s Mash Collective offshoot, the creation of Scratchley’s Itch brought an array of people… Read more

Bridge Road Brewers Little Bling

Tapped March 13th, 2015
First there was Bling. Then came Bling Bling. Next up was the new, improved Bling. And now there’s Little Bling, as Bridge Road adds a third blingy string to its roster of IPAs (not counting the rather lengthy list of single hop IPAs, such as Galaxy, Summer, (St)Ella, Vic Secret, even Pride of Ringwood, of course). The Little Bling is, as the name suggests, the smallest of the Bling family but equally eye-catching in its choice of clothing, opting for a mildly hallucinatory skin of vision-wobbling… Read more

Australian Brewery All Star Session IPA

Tapped March 12th, 2015
It was unusual, considering how much Australian drinkers love their fresh, punchy and hoppy beers, that The Australian Brewery declined to brew any form of New World IPA for so long. Perhaps even more so that, when they did finally relent in 2015, they opted for a Session IPA. But they had good reason as the original version of this beer was constructed in consultation with some Sydney bartenders who were after a post-work quencher in the realms of an IPA but without the accompanying high alcohol.… Read more

Boatrocker Brewery Miss Pinky

Tapped March 10th, 2015
The sour German beer style Berliner Weisse is proving rather popular with Aussie brewers these days. First released on a relatively wide scale by Feral in the guise of their Watermelon Warhead, it's been attempted with varying degrees of success by many brewers since. And it looks like Braeside's Boatrocker is making a stab at becoming something of a Berliner Weisse specialist with Miss Pinky becoming its third in March 2015 on the back of the pretty regularly released Mitte and the Orange Sherbet… Read more

Hawkers IPA – RETIRED

Tapped March 10th, 2015
Hawkers co-founder Mazen Hajjar is a man never shy with his opinions. And among those many strongly held opinions is that his IPA is his favourite of the Hawkers core range. You can see where he's coming from; having stepped up the hop aromatics a touch from the first batch, the brewing team has ended up with a beer of both depth and sessionability. Based upon the same three hops as the pale, but within a very different structure, it possesses pleasant enough grapefruit, passionfruit and pine aromas,… Read more

Noisy Minor Patersbier

Tapped March 9th, 2015
It's hard to come across a Belgian style beer bearing the name "Pater" – especially one with a stained glass window for its label – without thinking of possibly the most inappropriate label to appear on a beer: that for Beer Here's delicious Malus Pater. This one is far more tastefully decorated with the brewer's notes telling us: "Patersbier means 'Father’s Beer' - the beer the monks drink at their table after a long day brewing dubbels and tripels. It is lighter in alcohol… Read more

Hargreaves Hill Small Beer

Tapped March 7th, 2015
Maybe there's good reason we have a soft spot for Hargreaves Hill head brewer Kai Damberg's loquacious tasting notes. Having had a taste of this beer when it made a pre-launch appearance at The Alehouse Project for Craft Beer Rising, we sent an email to the brewery's rep asking for more info so we could post this listing. In said email, we described the beer as "spritzy", a word that, according to proper dictionaries at least, doesn't exist. Through came the tasting notes: "A light,… Read more

La Sirene Saison Nouveau – RETIRED

Tapped March 6th, 2015
"Another new saison variant from La Sirene?" you ask. Well, yes and no. For some time now, the beer bearing the name Saison from the Alphington brewery that you may have seen on tap has differed from the bearing the name Saison in bottle. When putting the original 6.5 percent beer into kegs, head brewer Costa Nikias couldn't get the results he wanted in the same way so he reworked the beer to pour as desired on tap. The result was a different beer with a lower ABV and now he's decided to… Read more

Murray's Ed Session IPA

Tapped March 6th, 2015
When Fred, Murray’s take on a West Coast American IPA, was released mid-late 2014, it plugged one of the very few gaps in the IPA style spectrum that Murray’s hadn’t brewed via its use of US instead of Kiwi hops. Well, it seems they’re now determined to plug every gap because hot on the heels of Skully – a Red IPA which was as delicious as it was limited in supply – comes Ed, Fred’s younger cousin. Ed is, goes the official description, “not quite as grown up, but just as brash”.… Read more

Seven Sheds Cherry Saison

Tapped March 4th, 2015
Seven Sheds' Cherry Saison is another beer that showcases more of their local region's producers. Here, one a year since 2015, they gather up tart, white-fleshed Kentish cherries from Mole Creek and Spreyton and put them through the wine press for the brew. The cherries add a pink hue and tart refreshing quality to what's a relatively full-bodied saison, joining soft spicy, banana like esters in a beer that starts out pretty sweet and ends much drier.… Read more
