Green Beacon

Such has been the phenomenal rise of craft beer in and around Brisbane in recent times that, despite only throwing open its roller door for the first time in January 2013, you could argue that Green Beacon is one of the elder statesmen of the local scene. Just as the number of quality beer bars has flourished in the city since Green Beacon tapped its first beer, so has the number of breweries and brewing companies calling South East Queensland home.

The long held dream of a pair of Brisbane schoolmates, Green Beacon set up home in Teneriffe, the Brisbane suburb enjoying a revival as a social and entertainment hub. Marc Chrismas and Adrian Slaughter had been inspired by time spent in cities such as New York and London while working overseas (one as a teacher, one in corporate finance). They turned this inspiration into a venue with a brewery installed on one side of a warehouse, a spotted gum bar and venue on the other and, these days, with food trucks found outside the venue every day.

The result is a bright and airy brewery that offers visitors a welcoming place to sit and sip while watching the brewers do their thing. When you do, you can pick from an award-winning core range found in an increasing number of bars, restaurants and bottleshops throughout the country, as well as a rotating selection of seasonal beers – from big IPAs to barrel aged beers to fruit sours – some of which have proven adept at bringing home silverware too.

In early 2017, they opened a larger, highly specced production site in Geebung complete with a centrifuge, reverse osmosis water filtration system and a “hot rocket”. The addition of this second brewery allowed Green Beacon to triple the output of its core lineup of 3 Bolt Pale Ale, Wayfarer USA and Windjammer IPA, meaning you can find their beers in most states.

It wasn't the only big success for the brewery in 2017. They became one of just three Australian breweries chosen as a partner by Singapore Airlines, meaning business class travellers can drink Wayfarer USA on flights between Brisbane and Singapore.

That came on the back of major trophy success; in May 2017 Green Beacon was named Champion Small Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards having collected the trophy for Champion Medium Brewery at the Craft Beer Awards 2016. It's been a remarkable and rapid rise for the brewery – and a sign of how smart Marc and Adrian were to launch their business at a time when craft beer in Brisbane had barely reached the fringes.

Green Beacon & Friends Oddfellows Pale Ale

Tapped January 3rd, 2018
If you've known Brisbane then and now, you may well be aware of the transformation of Caxton Street, the strip of venues that was once the preserve of big brand mid-strengths but has since become one of the more colourful collection of crafty venues you'll find in the city. It's a transformation worth celebrating and that's what Green Beacon has decided to do, bringing together a few of the street's venues in the creation of a new beer. The beer is named after the Independent Order of Oddfellows… Read more

Green Beacon Mainstay Amber Ale

The replacement for the brewery's Anchor Amber is this midstrength amber ale. Described as a new world amber with old world roots, the brewers say it's a combo of "toasty, toffee and gingerbread biscuit malt character ... balanced by a subtle but reassuring bitterness." New world hops are used in the hopback to lend an "orange zest and faint aniseed oil nose" while the body and flavour are designed to be bigger than its low alcohol content would suggest, making it a favourite… Read more

Green Beacon Grappler IPL

Green Beacon continue the tradition of mixing the old world with the new in Grappler IPL. "India Pale Lager?" I hear you ask. This beer is probably best described as the perfect marriage of a Vienna lager's malt profile seduced by the bright lights and glamour of a new world IPA's hops. Grappler's hops are sourced from the US, Australia, New Zealand and Germany and are a perfect mix of intriguing and beguiling, superlatively smashable. Brewer's notes… Read more

Green Beacon 3 Bolt Pale

British and Australian malt, hops from Australia, the US and UK and a clean ale yeast combine to produce a straw to gold coloured pale ale of distinct flavour and beautiful balance. Classic old world hop varieties provide a pleasant, refreshing bitterness whilst the late kettle and dry hops burst with new world aromas and flavours of citrus, mango, stonefruit and pine needle. 3 Bolt Pale is a flavoursome session ale, best drunk young and preferably in the presence of the brewer! Brewed using a combination of Australian and German barley malts, wheat and a traditional top fermenting German yeast culture, Cross Knot is a continental style bright ale that exhibits lager like smoothness due to an extended conditioning and cool fermentation. Clean and crisp, with soft herbaceous and mellow notes, it is complimented by mild bittering from a traditional noble hop variety and a southern hemisphere zinger on the nose. Green Beacon Windjammer IPA

Windjammer IPA pours a hop-hazed golden copper with a tight, persistent off-white head. Aromas of fresh lychee, candied orange, resinous pine needles and dried mango jump from the glass. The dry, caramel malt hint on the nose balances the abundant late kettle and fresh dry-hop character that are this beer's signature. The subtly sweet malt flavours are punctuated by a firm bitterness that lingers with a pleasant persistence for a time that belies this beers relatively humble ABV. Bold and beautifully… Read more

Where once there was the Wayfarer Wheat, a German style hefe, now there is the Wayfarer USA, a far hoppier American style wheat beer. THIS BEER HAS BEEN REPLACED IN THE LINEUP WITH MAINSTAY AMBER ALE Another Green Beacon favourite that lets the distinct malt profile clearly take centre stage. Green Beacon Scrimshaw Australian IPA 2017

Tapped December 14th, 2017
Scrimshaw has been the name of Green Beacon's summer seasonal for a few years now, named after the teeth of harvested whales into which sailors would engrave intricate designs back when whales were still hunted in the 50s and early 60s. It's a pretty brutal source of inspiration for a beer that packs a punch, but is altogether far more pleasant than the stories that inspired it. As in past years, this year's – the first to be canned – is an Australian IPA that layers heaps of Aussie hops atop… Read more

It's a sign of where we've come to that release notes from breweries can include phrases such as "approx 2 passionfruit per can" and it seems perfectly normal. In the case of Green Beacon's 7 Bells, a beer that's been seen for some time on tap and has now graduated into tinnies, the fruit comes accompanied by Himalayan pink salt and lactobacillus, making it very much a beer for today. As is their wont, Green Beacon have evolved the latest two seasonals to hit taps from the previous year's models that bore the names Grappler and The Whaler. For much of the Green Beacon team, the focus is very probably turning towards its second brewery, a production facility that will help them get beers out beyond their hometown of Brisbane. The brewers at Green Beacon have been favouring hops when it comes to their seasonal releases in recent times. And that's not about to change with Red's Dead. Green Beacon Grappler New World Pilsner

Tapped October 16th, 2015
Well, it is Spring, after all: the time for rebirths and all that jazz. And the latest release from Brisbane's Green Beacon is just that. Having recently decided to reinvent their Whaler as a blood orange IPA (it was previously a zesty golden ale), they've now decided to rework their Grappler. Last year, Green Beacon released The Whaler as its spring seasonal. Taking inspiration from the tale of a ship, the Duke of York, that, in the 1830s, having been repurposed as a whaler, turned out to be rather useless. On its maiden whaling voyage it was wrecked north of Moreton Bay without catching a single whale. The 2014 Whaler celebrated the moment via the means of a zesty golden ale. The biggest and baddest of Brisbane's Green Beacon's beers is back for a third round of heavy-hitting, hop forward action. The Uppercut is an ever-evolving beast with its exact makeup changing round by round according to the brewer's whim, but "always bold, always courageous. Another beer from Brisbane's Green Beacon drawing inspiration from the nautical world from which it takes its name. From 1952 until 1962, the waters of Moreton Bay were home to the Tangalooma Whaling Station. Over the course of a decade, for five months of the year, around 150 men were employed from all over the world to harvest whales barbarically for their meat and bones. In the off season, they would often drink beer and produce intricate engravings on the teeth of harvested whales, better know as "Scrimshaws".
